Playing with the Moon

Last week – the full moon was unbelievable! The deep cold of that evening somehow made the light feel frostier, bluer and crisper. Though this land is so familiar to me – witnessing it with a blue cast bestowed an otherworldly sensation to a walk that I do several times daily. Stars glowed brighter and the howls of the Coyotes seemed to blast more clearly through the air making it seem like they were closer than they were – or I hoped them to be.

Looking into the screen of my camera at each photo of the moon, I noticed the blurriness of the images – and the beginnings of line.  One of the things that came to mind was the series of Light drawings by Picasso. This series from Time/Life in 1949 captured the spontaneous and ephemeral beauty of light in a static image. (Isn’t that what we’re all after?) My efforts are nothing in comparison – as I am moving the camera to get the line, and the lines I make are nowhere near as elegant as what Picasso, a master, was able to create. What did happen though, was an opening up of a different process and the novelty of trying to get some place where the destination was not relevant. Out there that night, the process of trying different shots, moving the camera and seeing what came of that exploration was the objective. I think what follows is interesting and as a document, compelling as a point of departure for another exploration…..
